Villa des Poires - Villa of the Pears - so-named for the young pear orchard which has been established around the Villa and which, it is hoped, will be the source of a thriving fruitgrowing enterprise of the future. Pears were chosen because they are extremely long-lived and generous bearers of fine fruit, both for the fresh market but also for value-adding as a sideline. The Villa itself has been standing on this same site for around 70 years - lovingly maintained by successive generations of the Marchand family to retain it's warm appeal.
The current Marchands have not long returned to the Villa after spending time with extended family, whilst the old home's interior was completely gutted and rebuilt to modern standards, using time tested methods and materials where appropriate.
All the heavy traffic areas have been confined to the ground floor. Here you will find a comfortable sittingroom with fireplace; plus a separate TV lounge with an adjoining halfbath. An enormous sound/music studio and a well appointed library occupy opposite ends of the house to ensure minimum distraction to users of the reading room. The user-friendly kitchen occupies a central location on this floor; it is roomy with plenty of walkspace and includes a dinette. A set of glass doors gives access to a contemporary open-air entertaining area and to the stairs leading to the sunterrace on the first level. A full bath completes this floorplan - along with some comfortable seating strategically placed in the connecting hallways.
There are now 4 bedrooms and a nursery on the first floor The bedrooms comprise the master, a second double, a twin and a single - the first 3 having ensuite facilities - and the master bedroom has exclusive access to the sun terrace.
The end result is a delightful and spacious family home which still retains some of the characteristics of its earlier life, such as the beautiful, old brass bell which has been restored and now holds pride of place on the roof of the small studio perched two storeys above the living quarters and accessible by a narrow interior stairway.
Arnaud and Marie-Elise Marchand are no longer young and thought long and hard before deciding to part with their heritage, but they are above all, realists and know they are no longer able to do the work required. If country comfort within reasonable commuting distance of city amenities is your style, then why not come and spend some time at Villa des Poires? Who knows? Perhaps you won't be able to resist and will put down your roots here, as did those ancestral Marchands those many years ago.
