Born in England in 1874, Robert Service grew up in Scotland. At 21 he set off for North American and wandered the west coast from Mexico and California to British Columbia. A banking job in various BC towns eventually took him to Whitehorse, Yukon territory where he heard the legends of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. He began to record the stories in verse and prose, and in 1908 quit his job, bought a cabin in Dawson City and became a full time writer. His efforts were incredibly popular and when he left the North in 1912 he was a very wealthy man. He continued to write and travel the world. In the 1920's he was part of the glittering artistic scene in Paris. In the 1940's he lived in California, writing for and appearing in Hollywood movies. He spent his final years in Monte Carlo and France, where he died in 1958.
