Sea Change - could possibly be used to denote a change in offshore/onshore weather conditions or even a change in wave structure at sea - but not this time.
In this instance, Sea Change derives from the colloquial term used to describe the actions of people - usually in their middle adult years, whose children have all grown and left the family residence - who move from a city environment to a coastal one; sometimes for health reasons but usually to "get away from it all" and live a less constructed lifestyle. Often these sea-changers are retirees, but not always; some of them have successfully carried on their chosen career/profession in the new location, or begun a new vocation more suited to the change in environs.
Sea Change at 433 Sunnyside Blvd, Sunset Sands, was the choice of Margaret and William Goodyer when they decided that life in the city was just too stressful. Their livelihoods were earned in employment that could be just as easily be handled from home - Margaret as illustrator for a childrens' book publisher and Will as a freelance editor/reviewer, attached to the same publishing house. They had married rather late in life and had no children, so the location of their 'sea change' was not dependent upon proximity to family. They came upon Sunset Sands while enjoying a touring holiday away from the city, liked what they saw, found a house that suited them . . . and stayed.
Now, many years on, age has brought with it a raft of health complications for Maggie and Will, so they have wisely decided to join the happy residents at the local retirement village and put Sea Change on the market. The real estate brochure contains the following description -
Sea Change: This meticulously maintained, older property is situated in a prime position, adjacent to the safest beach in the area. It's wide verandahs - on the two sides facing the sea - protect the internal rooms from excessive heat when temperatures are high, and also blunt the force of the winds that are sometimes generated off the sea. The wide sun-deck with it's own sound system, the pool and the outside entertaining area are situated at the rear of the lot, so privacy is assured.
Sea Change is a 2storey home with 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom.. Apart from the features already mentioned, the ground floor comprises: a generously sized livingroom, with TV and sound system as well as a quiet corner with desk and computer access; a kitchen set up for serious cooks and having it's own dining nook; the bedroom and ensuite bath.
The upper level is accessed via an external/internal stair on the side verandah - and consists of 3 rooms and the sundeck. The rooms in order of entry from the stair are; a weights/exercise area cum art studio, a small music lounge and a game room. Double glass doors lead to the sundeck, which is furnished with a pair of shaded lounge chairs and a padded bench near the stereo - but there is room for much more.
. . . and there you have it. Sea Change is a simple, comfortable seaside residence. A permanent residence, not just a beach getaway.
