In the mid 1960s, there was a boom of affordable (read: cheap) tract homes that embodied the eternal idea that Californians Really Like Boxes. These 'starter' homes were dedicated to multipurpose and only had vague nods to conventions of the past. Aimed towards the young married couples, these homes promised plenty of entertaining space and room to expand while having minimal upkeep. It still never fools anyone when you paint concrete green and call it a lawn, though. Gaudy and bright decor, Shag prints and abstracts, were popular, as were plastics and chrome. Inflatable furniture turned these boxy wonders into large and primitive jump castles. Cheap pressboard furnishings and outlandishly toned formica countertops were practically screamed for. The unusual roof treatment on this little gem can easily be replaced with the small skylights popular in the era, which were thankfully easily removed, because they leak something awful.
The standard hollow core veneer doors are included in this house, but would certainly be replaced by beaded curtains. The more colorful the better. The main living space was for kitchen, dining, living and entertaining, opening in the back to a plain slab patio area where a barbecue and cheap plastic yard furniture would quickly accumulate, along with the weight set, bicycles, and house plants of dubious heritage. A large bedroom opens to a large bath, a second room could be a small bedroom with it's own outside door for your bachelor friend who never pays rent, a guest bath, or a utility room for laundry. There's room for a garden and pool, and expanding is as simple as adding a set of stairs and another box. Some sort of porch shelter would be a good investment, because those little houses heated up quickly with their shallow roofs and cheap walls. It isn't unusual for garages added on later to be better constructed. If you add a swimming pool, don't forget to have them plaster in some hokey tile design in the shallow end. In years to come, it will accumulate moss and gunk, and give you the pleasure of watching your children struggle to scrub it clean before they can go swimming.
