History:

In the same year when King Rajarajeswara Sur built the Raj Bhavan Palace, his wife, Queen Gayatri Devi,a very pious and kind hearted lady, built the Kali Temple in Magnolia Promenade.

The Kali Temple, dedicated to Kali, the "Cosmic Goddess of Time" exhibits all the best features of classical Hindu temple architecture. Built on a sprawling 40X30 piece of land, the temple complex houses not one but a number of temples dedicated to several Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu pantheon.



Architecture:

The main temple stands in the centre,and houses the 'garbhagriha' or the Sanctom Sanctorum,Here, the divine and beautiful idol of the Goddess is installed in all her splendour. The pilgrims can view her from the 'Jagamohana' or meeting-hall located to the east of the main temple. Here, pilgrims can make offerings of fruits,candles, incense-sticks and water to the Goddess.They can also perform the yajnas(sacrificial fire offerings) in the altar placed here. Meditation seats are available for the pilgrims to just sit back and meditate and realize the Goddess through yoga.

To the west of the main temple stands the Radha Krishna and Vishnu temples. Here, the Gods and Goddesses are worshiped in the form of 'shilas' (stones). Pilgrims can make offerings here as well.

The temple complex is flanked by six Shiva temples on its southern side. The six temples have their own Shiva lingams and pilgrims can make offerings of fruits, milk, incense and even candles.

In the middle of the courtyard, there is a Tulsi(Holy Basil) temple, a typical of temple architecture. On all sides, there are rooms and offices of the temple administration. The temple has two majestic gateways, one on the south and another on the west.Also there are some shops where pilgrims can keep their shoes before they enter the complex, and alos buy the offerings souvenir from.

Do visit the temple, and do not forget to offer a candle here. Legend has it, that lighting a candle in this temple makes your wish come true.
