After Princess Charlotte died in childbirth, the House of Hanover seemed to be in danger of dying out. To this end, Queen Charlotte and the Prince Regent ordered William to marry Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, a plain spinster of Royal Blood whose marriage arrangements would not require any wooing for William to mess up. Despite a childless marriage, Adelaide and William eventually became fond of each other.
