A few images of the traditional Japanese ghost, or Yurei. BOO!
The kanji for Yurei technically translates as 'Faint Spirit' or 'Dim Soul', what have you. Typical yurei are souls (reikon) made restless through powerful emotions, good or bad, which kept them from continuing on to the spirit world after death. They are usually seen, black hair flowing, in flowing white kimono, a staple for Edo period funeral wear in the old days, and sometimes are seen with this white triangular headdress called a 'forehead cover' (hitaikakushi) that were placed on the heads of corpses as charm against evil spirits prior to the funeral, so that the body is not violated by the restless dead.
Companions of the dead are wispy, tailed balls of stuff (call it ectoplasm, energy, light, fire, whatever makes you feel creepier) called Hitodama, whose kanji together mean Human Souls. They are the traditional Japanese depiction of the more anonymous spirits of the dead, or the shape they take while travelling, and are commonly seen in large swarms, especially in modern anime like Inuyasha. Like the Western Will o Wisp they have a tendency to trick the living into joining the ranks of the dead, leading them astray and causing unpleasant mishaps that leave people's lives in jeopardy. THe hitodama in the last triptych are specifically called Fox Fire (kitsune-bi), an illusory projection created exclusively by vulpine multi-tailed tricker spirits called Kitsune.
